Exploring Point Reyes National Seashore With Dogs

The Point Reyes National Seashore combines wide-open sandy beaches, dramatic ocean views, windswept coastal scenery, and epic wildlife photography opportunities. There is one important thing to know before you go: dogs are not allowed on most Point Reyes trails. Fortunately, several gorgeous beaches welcome leashed dogs!

South Beach

We stopped at South Beach on our Point Reyes adventure, and the dogs loved it. The beach captures the untamed beauty and wide-open spaces that make the Northern California coast so amazing.

There’s plenty of room to stroll along the sand, take photos, and let your dogs investigate all the interesting smells the ocean leaves behind. On a clear day, the scenery is spectacular. On a foggy day, the coastline has its own moody, dramatic beauty.

Even on a weekend, parking was easy in the large designated lot, and we encountered only a few other people on the beach.

North Beach

If you want more beach time, North Beach is another option for a dog-friendly visit. Like South Beach, it provides access to the expansive Point Reyes shoreline without requiring a long hike.

The broad sandy beach is perfect for a leisurely walk, photography, and enjoying the rugged coastline. As with South Beach, the ocean here is not a place for carefree swimming. Large waves and strong currents can make the water dangerous even when the beach looks calm.

Kehoe Beach

Kehoe Beach offers another dog-friendly option, with a trail leading through coastal scenery toward the sand. Dogs are permitted on the access trail and on the beach north of the trail.

This is a good choice if you want a little half-mile walk before reaching the shoreline.

As with the other beaches, verify current access restrictions before your visit.

Is Point Reyes Worth Visiting With Dogs?

Absolutely! As long as you plan around the pet restrictions, Point Reyes is a beautiful place to explore with your pups. From its scenic, dog-friendly beaches to the incredible wildlife, there’s plenty to enjoy even when you have to skip the hiking trails. We even captured these wildlife photos right from the road, so even with Luna and Momo along for the ride, we could still get our wildlife fix!
