Dog-Friendly Adventures in Butte County: Waterfalls, Wildflowers & Granite Wonders
Big Bald Rock
If you’re looking for an uncrowded dog-friendly destination with scenic hikes, waterfalls, wildflowers, and dog-friendly outdoor adventures, Butte County in Northern California should be on your list! Just a few hours from the Bay Area, this region is full of stunning landscapes — from granite domes to wildflower-covered plateaus and roaring waterfalls — all perfect for exploring with your dog. Here are a few of our Butte highlights.
- Feather Falls
One of California’s tallest falls, Feather Falls, is a must-visit for anyone who loves chasing waterfalls with their pup. Imagine Yosemite’s waterfalls, only without the crowds or dog restrictions. The Feather Falls National Recreation Trail is a moderate 8-mile loop down to the falls and a 1700-foot elevation gain back. We took the steep, shorter way down and the gradual climb back up.
While the falls are as stunning and powerful as ever, the trail was damaged by wildfires and has only recently reopened after restoration work. Many of the large trees were lost, leaving much of the route exposed to the sun, so it’s best to start early and avoid hot summer afternoons. Still, the hike is beautiful, with a few creek crossings where Luna and Linus loved cooling off along the way. It’s absolutely worth the trek!
Parking is free, and pit toilets are available at the entrance.
Big Bald Rock
Located in the Plumas National Forest, Big Bald Rock feels like stepping onto another planet. The trail is a moderate 1.5 miles round trip, making it a great adventure for both dogs and families. Once you reach the top, you can wander freely across the granite expanse, scramble up the various granite formations, and take in the epic panoramic views of the Feather River Canyon. It’s like a smaller, quieter version of some of Yosemite’s famous granite domes. There’s little shade, so pack water and plan for a morning or late-afternoon visit.

Table Mountain
Springtime in Butte County means one thing — wildflowers! And North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve near Oroville is one of the best wildflower displays in California.
Carpets of lupine, poppies, and goldfields blanket the plateau, and small seasonal waterfalls (like Phantom Falls and Ravine Falls) add to the beauty. The main trail is a 3.5-mile loop, but you can wander freely — just watch for uneven ground and grazing cattle.
There’s a small designated parking lot, and parking on the side of the road. Visitors 16 years or older are required to carry a land pass, which can be purchased online. The reserve can get busy during peak bloom season (March–April), so visit early in the morning or midweek for a little more room to explore.
Colby Meadows Winter Recreation Area
And don’t forget Butte County in the winter! When the snow starts falling, Colby Meadows turns into a winter wonderland. Located in the Lassen National Forest near Butte Meadows, this recreation area is perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing with your pup.
The terrain is gentle and open, making it easy to explore off-leash (where safe). If your dogs love the snow as much as our husky mutts do, Colby Meadows is the perfect uncrowded winter escape. Just be sure to pack layers, water, and paw balm for your dog’s paws.
